Flanker, St. James, has been known in the past for violence and other unlawful acts. However, in recent years, it has seen a change that has enveloped the community with a sense of peace.
Since partnering with the Flanker Peace and Justice Centre, the Sandals Foundation has provided employment; enhanced education and promoted peace in the inner-city community.
More than 3,500 residents have benefited from development initiatives at the community centre. These include: mentorship, literacy programmes, hospitality skills training for youth and conflict resolution.
A place for conflict mediation and support for children, the centre specializes in training for women and girls, sharing vital information on self- motivation, personal growth and development.
Young men, who were at risk of becoming victims of drug abuse and gangs, were redirected into music and studies driven by information technology.
The Flanker community has enjoyed a very collaborative relationship with the Sandals Group since 1981, when Sandals Montego Bay was opened.
The centre has long since outgrown its capacity as more and more youth seek refuge within its walls daily.
Fundraising efforts will be used to build a second floor at the Flankers Peace & Justice Centre. Your gift of US$10 or more will help to secure a brighter future for Flanker residents.
